The Trailridge Elementary Timberbots robotics hosted a Robot Sumo Tournament May 4 at John Knox Village retirement community.

Fourth-graders from Richardson Elementary visited the Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park May 8, concluding science lessons about ecology. Students toured the recycling center as well as the area that houses hazardous household waste and saw “the hill” where trash is dumped.

The Lee’s Summit R-7 high-school libraries are hosting a mother-daughter reading promotion this summer. Focusing on Jennifer Brown’s “Thousand Words,” the promotion is designed for high-school girls and their mothers.

Summit Christian Academy recently recognized senior Luke Hammer as the student of the year.

Members of the Lee’s Summit Police Department will join with Habanero’s restaurant May 16 for their annual “Tip-A-Cop” event to benefit Special Olympics.

Lee’s Summit R-7 high school students and theater productions were nominated for 13 awards in Starlight Theatre’s 11th annual Blue Star awards.

School supplies bound for Honduras.

Trailridge Elementary Student Council sponsored a Spirit Week during May to collect school supplies for school children in Honduras. The students brought in close to 4,000 school supplies to benefit the schools.

Brooke Myers, Greenwood, one of two recipients of the Outstanding Theatre Freshman at the Department of Theatre and Dance annual Players Banquet on May 3 at the University of Central Missouri.

Amanda Sutcliffe, Spring Hill, Tenn., received the Doris Achenbach Sensenich scholarship in family and consumer sciences, the Doris Houx Kirkpatrick Family Consumer Sciences scholarship, the Edna Gehlken scholarship in home economics, and the Rita L. Youmans scholarship in home economics at the College of Education scholarship and awards reception April 30 at the University of Central Missouri. Sutcliffe, daughter of Donna Sutcliffe, Spring Hill, Tenn., is a 2012 graduate of Lee’s Summit North High School. She is currently a freshman at UCM majoring in family and consumer sciences education.

The Lee’s Summit Kiwanis Club recognized four students at Lee’s Summit Elementary as Terrific Kids. Kiwanians Claire Jones and Richard Veasman made the presentation to the fifth grade-students. The students for the May selections are, from left to right, Katie Sledd, Keyara Conn, Layla Miller and Josee Lopez.

April was National Poetry Month and the elementary students at Summit Christian Academy recently spent time reading, analyzing and writing poetry.

The 2013 Lee’s Summit High School yearbook, the Reflector, was selected for inclusion in the Walsworth Gallery of Excellence. The yearbook was selected from high-school yearbooks throughout the region based on quality of photographs, excellent writing, creative design and ability to meet publication deadlines.
