A possible case of arson is being investigated after a fire in a Lakewood business was considered “suspicious in nature,” according to the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

At 7:13 a.m. on Friday, an employee at Chartwell Reality discovered smoke in the building when she came to work and immediately called 911.

According to reports, there was no smoke visible from the outside of the business when firefighters arrived. The LSFD entered the business and quickly extinguished a small fire in the office. The fire was under control by 7:39 a.m., reports stated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. If the fire inspector suspects arson, the case will become a criminal investigation under the Lee’s Summit Police Department.
