Greenwood works to complete lengthy list of improvements

In March 2011, the mayor of Greenwood outlined 93 sidewalk replacement, curb replacement, street repair and street overlay projects he hoped to complete.
As of last month, he said 69 of those items were completed, and the public works department was slated to continue pushing forward to complete more on the list.
Alderman and Mayor Pro Tem Nic Cover said the city of about 4,500 has made a lot of progress with infrastructure over the last few months.
Our biggest projects are all these road projects, he said. Were really focused on getting them finished.
Three of the bigger Greenwood road projects include the Ranson Road overlay and bridge widening in cooperation with Jackson County which was completed a few months ago, and work on Hamblen and Gambrell roads.
Improvements to Hamblen and Gambrell were part of a bond issue approved by Greenwood voters in 2008, but because of some tight budgets and the now-settled lawsuit with Martin Marietta Materials and Hunt Martin, the bonds couldnt be issued.
But thanks to the $7 million settlement in June 2010, the city was able to release the bonds and begin the design work for the road projects.
Hamblen was in horrible condition, Cover said. It was almost un-drivable and its been that way for a long time.
But the widening and overlay portion of the Hamblen project was completed about a month ago and Gambrell will soon be resurfaced as well.
A new bridge was also in the original plans for Hamblen Road, but Cover said after the city received the recommendations from the contracted engineers and architects of the project, the bridge was a much bigger undertaking than they expected.
Once were done with the rest of the Hamblen and Gambrell project, our plan is to take a look at the bridge again and see how much of the bond funds we have left, Cover said.
