William Edward “Bill” Polomsky

William Edward “Bill” Polomsky, 69, Lee’s Summit, died Dec. 31, 2011, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City, with his family by his side.

Bill was born March 1, 1942, in Chardon, Ohio, to Charles and Irene Polomsky. He graduated from Burton High School, Burton, Ohio, in 1960. He began his long career in public service and education as a teacher for Volunteers for Latin America in the mountains of Puerto Rico in 1962. He later served in the United States Air Force from 1963-1967 and was a Vietnam War veteran. Bill married Nancy J. Brockman Sept. 30, 1966, at Whiteman Air Force Base, Knob Noster. After returning from Vietnam, Bill attended Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, earning a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master of science degree in education, elementary guidance and counseling. Bill served the students of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District for 31 years before retiring in 2000.

He filled various roles at many R-7 schools during his long career including elementary school teacher, elementary guidance counselor, director and principal of the R-7 summer school program, Lee’s Summit High School guidance programs coordinator, project director for the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program grades K-12, and admissions liaison officer to the United States Air Force Academy. Bill was responsible for introducing the Air Force ROTC Program to the Lee’s Summit school district and also started “academy night” to increase student awareness of post-high school service academy opportunities. Following his retirement from the Lee’s Summit school district, Bill continued to serve the citizens of the town he loved so much, Lee’s Summit, by working for nine years as a civilian service officer for the Lee’s Summit Police Department.

Bill enjoyed many years working and coaching in youth athletics leagues in Lee’s Summit. He coached Pop Warner football, LSBA baseball, LSJBA basketball and Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation and AAU basketball. He especially enjoyed coaching his own children, Terri, Mark and Charles.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Polomsky.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Judy Polomsky, Wadsworth, Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Patty and John Taylor, Winchester, Va.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beverly and Jim Otten, Cole Camp; daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Joe DeSimone, Lee’s Summit; and sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Angela Polomsky, Triangle, Va., and Charles and Kate Polomsky, Woodbridge, Va.; and nieces and nephews, David Polomsky, Salt Lake City, Utah, Lisa VanDach, Punta Gorta, Fla., Carla Mack, Powell, Ohio, and Brent Otten, Cole Camp. Bill also leaves behind 10 grandchildren who were the lights of his life, Samantha, Lindsay, Tyler, Riley, Ashley, Sophia, Jillian, Anna, Lauren and Charlie. He is also survived by his 95 year old mother, Irene Polomsky, Winchester, Va., and countless other family members and friends.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 6 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lee’s Summit. Burial will be in Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
