United Methodist church adopts more than 60 families for Christmas
The Lees Summit United Methodist Church adopted more than 60 local families for Christmas.
The program, in its fourth year, was pursued in partnership with Lees Summit Elementary. It was so well received that there was a waiting list of members wanting to adopt families, the church said.
Even during this time of economic challenge, our church members opened their hearts and wallets to help those in need, said Jan Higdon, who chaired the program.
The church sponsored a personal-hygiene-supplies drive for the school and collected more than 240 toys and items, as well as making a significant gift in support of the Lees Summit Social Services Christmas Store.
Jim Preisig, senior pastor of the church, said he was not surprised by the response.
Time and again we see our congregation rise to the challenge of helping those in our community who find themselves in need, Preisig said. We are so pleased to have a congregation with such heart and compassion.
Lees Summit United Methodist Church provides community support throughout the year through its Impact program. It includes Souper Bowl Sunday, which provides more than 36,000 cans of soup to Lees Summit Social Services, and Run for the Summit, a 5K race that has raised more than $100,000 for the Lees Summit Elementary Family Fund. Impact also supports the Westport Soup Kitchen plus other causes in locations ranging from Joplin to Nicaragua.
