John P. Farmer, Overland Park, Kan., died Jan. 9, 2012, at Kansas City Hospice House after a courageous battle with a stroke, lung and bone cancer.

John was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Independence, to Carroll and Thelma Farmer. John graduated from Northeast High School in 1953 and joined the Marine Reserves. Receiving a discharge from the Reserves, he served in the United States Air Force until December 1958. After honorable discharge, he went to work for AT&T Manufacturing (Western Electric) in Lee’s Summit. He retired from AT&T at the Orlando, Fla., plant in 1988.

John married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Lynn in 1957, and they raised four children in the Lee’s Summit area. John was active in little league baseball and basketball and served as president of little league baseball.

John is survived by his wife, Sharon Farmer; sons, Daniel Farmer and wife, Rita, Carey Dean Farmer and Tim Lee Farmer and wife, Theresa; five grandchildren, Danielle Farmer, Scott McDermot, Kenslee Farmer, Nick Farmer and Lacie Farmer.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 14 followed by a funeral service at noon at Floral Hills Funeral Home.
