Filing for the Lees Summit City Council, municipal judge and R-7 School Board seats has drawn to a close, and until the very last minute, the last day was a quiet one.
At 5 p.m. on the dot Paul Dewalt filed for the District 3 city council seat. He will be running against another District 3 newcomer, Derek Holland. The sitting council member, Joe Spallo, could not run again due to term limits.
Prior to Dewalt, no candidate had filed at City Hall since Rob Binney came in Jan. 12 to file for the District 1 City Council seat. And prior to that, no one had filed since the very first day of filing on Dec. 13.
Candidates that will appear on the April 3 ballot for city officials barring any eligibility problems not known at this time are:
District 1
- Rob Binney
- Robert Dye
- Jacquelyn Gates
- Wesley Veasman
District 2
- Allan Gray, incumbent
District 3
- Derek Holland
- Paul Dewalt
District 4
- Bob Johnson, incumbent
Municipal judge
-James Tobin, incumbent.
No one challenges R-7 incumbents
The Lees Summit R-7 School District Board of Education filing deadline came and went Jan. 17 with no new candidates having filed since the two incumbents up for re-election did so on the opening day for filings. The incumbents, Ron Baker and Patti Buie, both filed for new three-year terms on Dec. 20. The filing deadline was 5 p.m. Jan. 17.
I dont know, Baker said when asked about the lack of April election competition. I would guess people are reasonably happy with the way things are going in the school district and that they dont feel a need to volunteer their time. Baker, who said he spends 20 to 40 hours a week on school board issues, will be serving his second term. He retired in 2001 after a 36-year career with the R-7 district, during which he taught science and served as the districts first secondary science department chairman and first energy manager.
Buie, who has served on the board since 2000, including three years as its president, will be serving her fourth term. A homemaker and mother of two Lees Summit North High School graduates, she earned a degree in child and family development/early childhood education from the University of Missouri. She previously worked as an R-7 substitute teacher and in medical transcription.
