The Lee’s Summit West girls’ basketball team outscored North Kansas City 17-4 in the second quarter and kept them at arm’s length the rest of the game for a 48-42 home win Jan. 23.

Down 8-7, the Titans came out in the second quarter firing on all cylinders with Allison Finneseth scoring a traditional three-point play and Jasmine Edwards turned a steal into a transition layup at the 7:19 mark to take a 12-7 lead.

And while the offense started to heat up, the defense turned up the pressure.

“I think we forced them to take poor shots,” said Lee’s Summit West head coach Darin Hall. “We didn’t bail them out and foul; we kept them off the free-throw line and I think they got a little frustrated ... I thought we contested shots and did a good job of allowing them to get one opportunity each offensive set.”

Edwards and Emiah Bingley each scored eight first-half points to help give the Titans a 25-12 cushion at the half, but Bingley carried the Titans in the second half with 13 more points.

“(Bingley’s) an outstanding player and she’s definitely our go-to girl,” said Hall. “She did a good job of getting our kids in the right spots and executing our offense. She was able to get to the rim and then she had several opportunities where she collapse the defense and kicked it out for another kid to get a good shot as well.”

North Kansas City started the second half with seven straight points to close the gap to 25-19 with 4:56 left in the third quarter, but the Titans answered. After Kelsey Shanahan knocked down two free throws, Bingley scored the next six Titan points to extend the lead back to 33-21.

The Lady Hornets never got closer than seven points until their last bucket in the final minute of the game as the Titans scored all ten of their fourth-quarter points from the foul line.

The Titans improved to 8-11 and 4-2 in Middle Six Suburban Conference play.

“It was a good win. Just a week ago we had a rough outing and didn’t play very well in the Truman Tournament and a week later we’ve won three in a row, so it’s a good feeling,” Hall said.

The Titans got embarrassed by Shawnee Mission Northwest in the first round of Truman’s tournament 66-22 then rebounded with wins over Southwest Early College and St. Teresa’s Academy last week.
