Cops on Top raises nearly $4,000
By Rob Roberts, rroberts@lsjournal.com
Two Lees Summit police officers raised $3,953 for Missouri Special Olympics by spending almost 12 hours on the top of Habaneros restaurant, 1008 S.E. Blue Parkway, Jan. 19.
Sgt. Brian Wilson, who was joined by Officer Jeremy Brownlee in hoisting Cops on Top donation buckets, said the two of them raised $1,033 in cash.
Two larger donations, both checks for $1,000, were made by Habeneros and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 50.
Just as important as the money raised on Jan. 19 was the awareness and the support our community showed for the Special Olympics, Wilson said. The restaurant was packed for lunch, and from 5 p.m. until close there was a waiting list to get a table.
Cops on Top was the second of four fundraising events that the Lees Summit Police Department is conducting on behalf of Special Olympics this month.
The events kicked off Jan. 14 with the second annual Freezin for a Reason motorcycle, Jeep, convertible and hot rod ride. More than 100 people participated, and more than $10,000 was raised.
The third event, which raised $2,000, was the second annual Athletes for Athletes Crossfit competition Jan. 21 at the New Summit Presbyterian Church.
The final event this month will be the annual Polar Bear Plunge.
This years plunge will be held at noon on Jan. 28 at Longview Lake.
Sgt. Wilson will lead a team of brave volunteers who will plunge into the icy waters for the cause. Wilson will participate as a super plunger, which means he will enter the water once each hour for a 24-hour period beginning on Jan. 28.
