Annette Braam, a member of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Board of Education, has resigned because her family is moving out of the district.
“My husband and I have been looking for a home over the past two years and recently found one that would meet our needs,” Braam said in a resignation letter to board president Jack Wiley. “Unfortunately, although still in Lee’s Summit, it is not located in the R-7 School District.”
The school board will discuss the process of replacing Braam during a special board meeting set for 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at the district’s administrative offices, 301 N.E. Tudor Road.
According to minutes for the meeting, the board will accept letters between Feb. 13 and Feb. 27 from those interested in completing Braam’s unexpired term. A board committee will receive the letters on March 8, and final candidates will be interviewed between March 12 and March 23. The new board member will then be appointed on April 12.
Braam, whose resignation was effective Feb. 1, served on the local school board from 2002 to 2005 and was re-elected in April 2010.
“I cannot begin to express what an honor it has been to work with a Board of Education whose first priority is always doing ‘what’s best for kids,’” she wrote. “Although we have certainly faced some trying issues, the fact that the Board has always worked to come to consensus on these issues has made the touch decisions easier to handle.”
Leaving the district and board was also “an extremely tough decision,” Braam wrote, adding that she is resigning “with great sadness.”
