Although tax season can be, well, taxing, some are trying to make it less so.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, the city of Lee’s Summit and the United Way of Kansas City are sponsoring free tax preparation services on Tuesdays this month. This will be the fifth year for the program, which has assisted more than 350 low-income households.

“We bring in the professionals that know how to fill out the tax forms,” said Mark Dickey, vice president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce. “And we also have people come in and volunteer – young people and groups – and they get to give back to the community.

“It’s a win-win for the community. It helps those folks out and helps get money back into the community.”

The service is available to all Lee’s Summit residents that residents that are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Eligible taxpayers can avail themselves of the service from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and Feb. 28 at Lee’s Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green St. Taxpayers will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis

EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families.

According to the city of Lee’s Summit website, many individual citizens are eligible for this credit, and the EITC benefits increase with the number of qualifying children and credit expenditures are weighted more to larger families. This provides greater benefits to low and moderate-income families than more traditional government benefit programs, such as cash welfare or food stamps.

“This is a tax credit not everyone knows about,” Dickey said.
