Mia Michaels visits LS
Mia Michaels, best known for being an Emmy-award winning choreographer and judge on the “You Think You Can Dance” television show, visited Lee’s Summit Nov. 13 for a one-night teaching session at Steppin’ Out dance studio. Michaels is the premier choreographer for contemporary dance, said Steppin’ Out owner Phyllis Balagna. Michaels has been a prominent part of many concert productions, working for stars such as Madonna and Prince, or movies, including a recent release Rock of Ages starring Tom Cruise. The two met and became friends about 11 years ago at a Michaels workshop, Balagna said. Michaels happened to have an opportunity to visit Balagna’s studio and offered to be a guest teacher for a night. Balagna said Michaels has a unique ability even in a single lesson to help kids do their best by encouraging them to look inwards for inspiration. “Of course I just jumped on it,” Balagna said. “There’s no one at the top of their game like Mia. She can transform the way they view their approach to dance. ”
