Irene Josephine Sneed passed away on Jan. 10, 2013, at the age of 97, at the Groves Care Center in Independence.
Irene was born on Dec. 18, 1915 in Lone Jack. She was the oldest of eight children born to William Harrison West and Dollie Jessie Irene (Faulkenberry) West.
Irene graduated from Lone Jack High School in 1935 and married Milton Cave Sneed on June 8, 1935. She spent her first 20 years of marriage as a homemaker and mother. Irene loved homemaking, sewing and gardening. Upon her children growing up, she first worked at Harzfeld’s and while working there bought a typewriter and taught herself to type and then applied and was accepted at a medical assistants technology school. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital and for several doctors and an orthodontist in the Country Club Plaza area before retiring. Upon retiring, she was offered a job at a hotel on the Plaza and worked there for five to six years.
She then permanently retired and moved to Lee’s Summit to be closer to her family. She had now come full circle and once again had her beloved gardening, cooking and sewing to lavish on grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; all six brothers; Walter, Elmer, Warren, Jasper, James, Donald and infant Norman William West; her husband, Milton; her son Robert Leroy, her grandson, Robert Daniel and her son-in-law Delbert Hofstetter.
Irene is survived by her sister, Edith Elizabeth (West) Withers; her daughter Carol (Sneed) Hofstetter; son James Sneed; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and one great-great granddaughter due any day, 3 sisters-in-laws; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. on Jan. 16, 2013 at Langsford Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to services from noon-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial in the Lone Jack Cemetery.
