Students and staff members from Lee’s Summit High School and Pleasant Lea Elementary will take a dip in the ice-cold waters at Longview Lake on Jan. 26 as part of a benefit for Missouri Special Olympics. More than 80 students and employees from both schools have signed up so far to participate in the 2013 Polar Plunge Kansas City, which supports Special Olympians within our community. Each team member is securing pledges for his or her plunge into the chilly lake.

Through year-round athletic competitions, Special Olympics fosters acceptance and inclusion for children and adults with disabilities. Within Missouri, more than 15,000 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.

At Lee’s Summit High School, Student Senate is leading the school-wide effort to involve volunteers and raise money for this charitable organization. The two schools’ team is known as “Tigers on Ice.” To learn more about the team, to become a Tigers on Ice member or to donate, visit http://tinyurl.com/d4sbrze.
