Michael Walker, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Summit Lakes Middle School, was recently named the Lee’s Summit Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5789 Teacher of the Year for 2012-13. He was honored at a VFW meeting on Jan. 9.
The VFW annually recognizes educators who teach citizenship education topics and promote America's history, traditions and institutions effectively. Each local post submits its winning teacher for consideration in the district-level contest. District winners advance to state with state winners progressing to national competition.
