Lee’s Summit snow plows are treating streets with salt to be ready for a blast of new snow expected to hit the city sometime tonight.

The National Weather Service predicts 7 to 10 inches of snow as the storm moves into the area and an additional 1 to 3 inches Tuesday. Some forecasters are calling for freezing rain in the early periods of the storm arriving.

The Fire Department is warning it is not safe to build snow forts in piles of snow alongside streets. Children playing in them could be hit by snow plows or accidentally buried.

Instead, build forts in back yards away from city right of ways.

The Lee’s Summit Public Works Department also asks residents to help it clear streets as quickly as possible by:

• Staying home Tuesday and Wednesday if possible

• Parking vehicles off streets because on street parking interferes with clearing a good path

• Shovel snow in driveways or parking lots onto another part of your property, not into the street

Instead, build forts in back yards away from city right of ways.

Report problems to the city’s snow desk at 816-969-1870.

But please don’t call to ask when your street will be plowed, officials said, or to ask for them to clear your driveway.

Deputy Director Bob Hartnett said the city can’t predict the exact schedule it will get to a particular neighborhood. Crews starts clearing arterial and collector streets and move to residential streets as quickly as possible. To be fairer, the city has a list of streets and from one event to the next reverses the order in which streets are plowed.

Lee’s Summit City Hall and Jackson County offices will be closed on Tuesday due to inclement weather.
