Jodi Guess Scruggs can’t say much about her upcoming appearance on the Dr. Phil Show, but the Lee’s Summit resident does know viewing of the episode will be a family affair.

Scruggs will be a guest on the show Feb. 28. The episode, which deals with anxiety and highlighted by a NBA basketball player’s fight against his team and what he calls a lack of treatment for his anxiety disorder and fear of flying, will air at 3 p.m. locally on KMBC-TV Channel 9. Scruggs, whom the show’s previews said has a fear of heights, will gather around the television with family members to watch the show.

Scruggs was joined at the taping by her husband Chatten and sister Jill Guess Crall of Albia, Iowa. The segment is called ‘Paralyzed by Fear.’

“The family that lives here locally in Lee’s Summit, we’re all planning to watch it when it airs,” she said Feb. 25 via telephone. “The family that lives in Iowa, they’re all are planning to watch it, of course. My sister, she’s a school teacher so they are all trying to figure out a way to hopefully watch it at school. All the family is planning to gather around the TV. Whether we can be together or not, we are all planning to see it.”

A website posting that detail the upcoming episode states that Scruggs: “Says her extreme fears of heights and flying and are taking over her life – and cheating her 8-year-old daughter, Charlee, out of opportunities. (Scruggs) admits that she’s turned down jobs that may require her to get on a plane, encourages her daughter to focus on local activities and dissuades her from following her dreams of joining a competitive dance group because they travel. Watch as (Scruggs) faces her two biggest fears: flying on an airplane and driving over a bridge. Can she learn to calm her anxiety and start living a life without fear?”

“We’re excited for it to show on Thursday, that’s for sure,” Scruggs, a pharmacy technician at Price Chopper, 300 S.W. Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit, said of her appearance on Dr. Phil. “The only thing I am allowed to say is that I’m going to be on it and the date. The name of the segment I’m told is ‘Paralyzed by Fear.’ I can’t talk about any of that until after it airs.”
