Dear Editor,

Safety and progress are the two issues before us in the upcoming bond elections. Safety for school children, bicyclists, joggers and even motorists with the improvement of Orchard Street and Pryor Road. These planned improvements are not just for aesthetic reasons, but rather to reduce the likelihood of a tragedy. If you’re not familiar with these roads, I urge you to take a short tour to get the full picture.

The other issue relates to the continuing efforts to build on Lee’s Summit’s reputation as the ideal community. Lee’s Summit Historical Society currently has over a thousand artifacts related to our place in history, but there just isn't enough room to display them appropriately in the old train station on Main Street. Restoring the old post office will give them the room they need, and adding the outdoor festival area will result in yet another attraction to our historic downtown.

The amphitheatre at Legacy Park will add a new venue for attracting events, visitors and growth. Legacy Park is already a major metropolitan park, but this addition will bring in even more activities and revenue for our city.

I’ll be voting “yes” for both general obligation bond issues in April.
