Lt. Col. (Ret) STEPHEN M. GODFREY

Stephen M. Godfrey, 94 passed away Feb. 27, 2013 in Lee’s Summit.

He was born Aug. 3, 1918 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. to Ross Orange and Louise (Mellotte) Godfrey. He was a 28-year veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a meteorologist, retiring in 1969. In 1971, he began a second career as a Trust Officer with United Missouri Bank for ten years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Janette Parker Godfrey, his parents and four siblings. He leaves one sister, Jean Kenyon of N.Y. He also leaves six children; Sue Sailors (Don), Steve Godfrey (Carol), Bob Godfrey (Deborah), Pete Godfrey (Chris), Dave Godfrey (Debbie) and Carol Lea; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Stephen was a steadfast Christian and lived a life of devotion and inspiration to his family, his country, his church and community. His life was spent in good humor, an optimistic outlook, generosity and of the highest integrity. He was a very social person who always loved to tell a good story threaded with many of his personal life experiences.

Always a generous person, he particularly supported Christian and Veteran charities, often making 500 or more contributions each year. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Red Bridge Church of Christ, Blue River Church of Christ or any other organizations that support veterans.

A service was held on March 2 with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.
