a teenage boy

was kidnapped

and enslaved

by marauders

from a neighbor

land where

slave trading

waging war

and human

sacrifice

were ways

of life

six years

later

a vision

brought him

news

he would

escape

go home

and did

then voices

in recurring

dreams

called

boy

we need you

to return

walk among

us once again

so back

he went

to live with

former captors

he may not

have chased

the snakes

away

or used

clover leaves

to teach

the mystery

but he struck

a light

that burned

throughout

dark ages

after

because

he understood

what others

suffering

is like

became

an advocate

for those

on the fringes

his faith was

celebratory

not sin centered

but about

the wonders

of creation

smiling eyes

laughters lilt

leprechauns

good luck

centuries later

a potato famine

brought his

people here

unwanted

as recent

immigrants

often are

they became

a blessing

so for a day

join honoring

the stolen boy

raise a glass

of stouter brew

soak beef stew

play celtic tunes

fiddle and parade

you

like patrick

are someones

saint

too
