April 24, 2013

Rev. Helen L. Brown, 94, of John Knox Village, Lee’s Summit, Missouri passed peacefully on to her eternal life on April 22, 2013 at the Village Hospice House.

Helen was born on Dec. 7, 1918 in Kansas City, to Benjamin Franklin Kingery and Rowena Mericle Kingery. As an only child, she grew up in Kansas City but spent her summers at C-15, Lake Lotawana. She was one of the original “Lotawana Lake Rats”. Helen married her husband, La Monte C Brown, on December 4, 1937. They had two sons; Gary Franklin and Randal Wesley. They lived in Kansas City and were active in Calvary Lutheran Church and School. In 1956 they moved to the suburbs of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. After both sons graduated from Lee’s Summit High School, La Monte became pastor in the United Methodist Conference of Iowa in 1970. They moved to Iowa at that point to serve his first church in Logan. Helen decided to join her husband in the ministry and was ordained in 1977. At this time, Helen was one of the few women pastors. They served churches across the state of Iowa including congregations in Logan, Greenfield, Clearfield and Eddyville. Helen retired from the conference in 1984, and at that time they returned to Lake Lotawana. After La Monte’s death in 1987, she continued to live at the Lake until 2008, when she moved to an independent living apartment at John Knox. She served as Pastor Emeritus at Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church until her death.

Helen was a graduate of Barstow School, Kansas City and Garrett Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, National Conference of Clergy Women, and the Lake Lotawana Community Club.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, La Monte and her son, Randal Wesley Brown.
