Vera (Babcock) Simmons

Vera Jean (Babcock) Simmons, 88, St. Joseph, Mo. passed away June 2, 2013, at her daughter’s home in St. Joseph surrounded by her family.

Vera was born Aug. 8, 1924 in St. Joseph, the daughter of Alex and Georgia Ruth (Martin) Ratliff. On May 14, 1965, she was united in marriage to Marion K. Simmons in Kansas City. He preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1997. She enjoyed her dog, traveling, living and spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Don and Robert Ratliff and her sister, Mary Hautzenrader.

Vera is survived by her daughters; Pat Rainez and husband, Rick of St. Joseph, and Peggy Pack and husband, Steve of Lee’s Summit; two stepsons, Ron Simmons and wife, Sherri and Mike Simmons and wife, Michelle; her siblings; Shirley Swyhart of Austin, Texas, Donna Elder and husband Bill, Lucille Knapp, Loretta McCray, Alex Ratliff and wife Sandy, all of St. Joseph, Ronald Presnell and wife Betty of Washington; fourteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. June 6, 2013 at Liberty Cemetery north of Warrensburg with Reverend Gary Carter officiating. Pallbearers will be Rick Jr., Caleb and Robert Rainez, Andy, Cameron and Steve Pack II. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. at Sweeney-Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, 617 N. Maguire Street, Warrensburg, MO, 64093.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Newfoundland Club of America Health Challenge and can be left in care of the funeral home.
