Teen drowns in Lee’s Summit cove

A Raytown teenager drowned June 8 in a cove on a private lake in the Lakewood area of Lee’s Summit.

According to the Lee’s Summit Police Department, officers responded approximately 3:50 p.m. to the 200 block of N.W. Aspen on the report of a possible drowning. When officers arrived they were told that a 16-year-old male was attempting to swim across the cove when he slipped beneath the water.

Officers were unable to attempt a rescue effort and crews were brought to the scene to attempt a recovery.

At approximately 6 p.m. the body of the teen, identified as 16-year-old Emmanuel Palmer of Raytown, was located by members of the Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit. Palmer attended Raytown High School.

The area where the youths were swimming was a cove located in Lakewood subdivision on a private lake.

The Lee’s Summit Police Department was assisted by members of the LS Underwater Recovery Unit, the LS Fire Department and the Missouri State Water Patrol as well as investigators from the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
