July 18, 2013

A Lee’s Summit man was injured Wednesday morning when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle along S.W. Ward Rd. near S.W. Stuart Rd. in Lee’s Summit.

According to a news release from the Lee’s Summit Police Department, officers were called to the scene of the accident at approximately 11:30 a.m. July 17.

The preliminary investigation shows that the bicyclist was traveling northbound on S.W. Ward on the right side of the roadway when he was struck from behind by the driver of a mini-van.

As the driver of the mini-van slowed after the impact, that vehicle was struck from behind by a second vehicle.

The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital by ambulance with a serious but non-life threatening head injury. The other two drivers were unhurt.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken into custody for driving on a suspended license.

The names of the bicyclist and other drivers have not been released. The northbound lanes of S.W. Ward will be shut down until approximately 2 p.m. while officers reconstruct the scene as part of the investigation.

The entire investigation will be completed prior to a review of the case facts to determine if charges or citations will be issued in the case.
