Someone is posing as a Lee’s Summit water department employee to steal personal credit card information, calling residents and saying it’s needed to resolve a water bill problem.
The Lee’s Summit Water Utilities wants customers to know that the department will not telephone customers to request credit card or personal information.
Utility representative Miranda Landstra said about a dozen customers had called the department or City Hall recently to report the issue.
“Unfortunately some of those customers gave their payment information to the caller and we have asked them to file a report with the Lee’s Summit Police Department,” Landstra said.
She said the utility does not under any circumstances telephone customers to request payment information, asking for credit card or personal information.
Customers desiring to pay water bills by telephone are directed to call a Secured Telephone Payment System at 816-969-4636. Or they can use the online payment system at utilitylink.cityofls.net.
Landstra said customers with questions about a telephone call received regarding water bill payments should call a customer service representative at 816-969-1900. If you believe you have been a victim of a fraud, please call the Lee’s Summit Police Department at 816-969-7390.
Beth Glover, a police department representative, said a check of records back to July 26 did not show any reports of losses regarding the calls.
The department received at least one call to report the fraud, but that person didn’t give their information to the imposter.
People who gave the caller personal information may have been able to cancel their accounts before any charges were made, Glover said.
