Personalized license plates have been a hot item since their appearance. Some people find them a boost to their ego. Some see them as a way to spread a little rumor to the world. Others feel they provide an easy way to remember their license plate number. Personalized plates seem to be an alternative of those random number and letter combinations borne on plates since 1949. Prior to 1949, license plates carried strictly number combinations. This was changed when automobile registrations in the state approached 1,000,000. Every phase of license plates production is carried on by Missouri State Penitentiary inmates as part of the Division of Corrections.
