Safe places. Circa 20th century: home, friends house, anywhere outside, churches and homes of worship, local libraries. 2013…strike all of the above from that list, and add the net.
Last night, I felt kicked in the gut as a fellow mom asked the following question via social media:
“Is anyone else distressed by the books ‘advertised’ on the new library website? Front and center... this is the description for the first book that shows up: The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.”
Growing up, the Midwest stood for values. And stood proud of those family values, I might add. What’s happening? How many people choose to fall asleep despite – or turn their backs on – the enemy trying to decimate all we once held sacred?
Lee’s Summit folks, Yours Truly, a distinguished Community of Character…I’m let down today. We represent more, we stand upon things that are pure, lovely, noble and right.
Another woman wrote in and shared her heart’s question “Should we address the young adult fiction choices being 90 percent vampire reads?”
It’s been said many times “stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.” What do we choose to promote? Literary selections which build up? Or those that tear down through perversion?
A mom in Lone Jack, who happens to also be an educator, expressed her disgust “it’s all become porn…written porn.” In her opinion it started with a certain book, but I’m choosing to not disclose which one. Why should that one get even more coverage?
As a society, we breed what we promote. Choose wisely, and know how impressionable we all are. It starts at home, so parents, let’s do our part and help cultivate safe environments. Put our feet down when it comes to things that detract from the family values we tirelessly work to maintain.
Remove the trash, prune the gardens and let’s get back to a home – both physically and on the net – we’re proud to call such.
We can steer the ship back to a more noble future, one that we’re confident will bless future generations. No more excuses, no more blind acceptance of what others are doing. Let’s take a stand and choose to stand strong in safety.
