The Lee’s Summit defense fought to hang on for a 3-2 victory over Lee’s Summit West Sept. 3 at Lee’s Summit West.

“We played pretty well,” Lee’s Summit shortstop Bailey Baird said. “It’s always tough playing Lee’s Summit West or Lee’s Summit North because we both want to win pretty badly.”

The Tigers scored a run in the first inning as Natalie Dummitt singled to right field, followed by a single from Emily Robinson to left field. Mady Mosier got to first base on a pass ball and Dummitt scored.

Lee’s Summit kept the 1-0 lead into the third inning when Baird doubled to left field. Dummitt singled to center field, giving Baird the chance to score and putting the Tigers up 2-0.

But in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Titans responded with a run of their own. Mandy Roberts got to first base on a pass ball with Caitlyn Knox put in as a courtesy runner. Daphne Plummer singled, then Monica Taulbert singled. Lesli Watkins got to first base next on a Tiger error, giving Knox the chance to score.

But in the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers came back as Baird doubled to left field. Rachel Pate singled and Baird scored to give Lee’s Summit a 3-1 advantage.

With Robinson on the mound for the Tigers, the Titans had three strikeouts in the next two innings.

“I was just trying to be relaxed and I know my defense had my back,” Robinson said. “They are a really good defense.”

“Emily was able to throw a bunch of ground balls,” Baird added. “It’s much easier when she throws great pitches and it’s easier to make throws that way.”

But in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Titans weren’t ready to give up. Mac Long hit a triple, followed by a single from Sam Chiarelli, which sent Long home. But Bobbi Bodenhamer hit a fly ball that was caught by Lee’s Summit’s Dummitt and Maddy Price was struck out to end the game.

“West is always known for putting a really good team together,” Robinson said. “...We had good defense and timely hitting and we got the runs we needed.”

Lee’s Summit was led by Dummitt with two hits and one RBI. Baird had two hits and Pate had one RBI. Robinson threw all seven innings with seven strikeouts.

Lee’s Summit West’s Long had two hits and Chiarelli had one walk. Roberts pitched for seven innings with seven strikeouts.
