Lee’s Summit West took first place in the Bronco/Titan Round Robin Soccer Tournament held Sept. 3-5 at Lee’s Summit West and Lee’s Summit North.

The Titans slipped past Lee’s Summit North 2-1 in the championship game Sept. 5 at Lee’s Summit West.

“Despite a few miscues and a bit of a slow start, I thought we put together some especially solid play for it being this early in the season,” Lee’s Summit West head coach Chris Brizendine said.

The Titans first goal came at 30:58 minutes in the first half after Bronco junior defender Trey DeRousse slid into Titan junior forward Tony Mok in the goal box trying to stop Mok from scoring. DeRousse received a yellow card and Lee’s Summit West was granted a direct free kick.

Lee’s Summit West senior forward Chase Fearon took the kick and beat out Lee’s Summit North junior goalkeeper Nick Cooper for the goal.

But the Broncos tied things up at the 22:14 minute mark as Bronco senior midfielder Cody Hoffman slipped past several Titan defenders to score.

Lee’s Summit West had the last say in the second half with a score by Mok to earn the victory.

The Titans, 3-0, also defeated Olathe North 9-0 and St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 in the tournament.

“We played some quality, well-coached programs to begin our season,” Brizendine said. “It certainly was an early challenge to have three games in three days to open the season. The boys put together some nice sequences offensively and strung several passes together in possession in all three games. Defensively, we stayed organized and held together through some high pressure, especially late in the Aquinas and North games.”

In the Olathe North game, Lee’s Summit West goals were scored by senior forward Max Ostrander with four, Mok with two, Fearon with two and one by sophomore midfielder Dalton Dye. The shut out was by junior goalkeeper Aaron Gerdes.

In the St. Thomas Aquinas game, Fearon scored both goals.

Lee’s Summit North, 1-2-1, ended in a 1-1 tie with St. Thomas Aquinas and shut out Olathe North 6-0.
