Six R-7 School District students named National Merit Scholarship Corporation semifinalists

Six Lee’s Summit R-7 School District seniors were recently named National Merit Scholarship Corporation semifinalists through the national program. Students recognized are Kyle Angle and Andy Jarnevic, Lee’s Summit High School; Sam Dowd, Heidi Simpson and Evan Weidner, Lee’s Summit North High School; and Anna Poudel, Lee’s Summit West High School.

Recognized students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 National Merit Scholarship Awards, worth close to $33 million, to be offered next spring. There are approximately 16,000 semifinalists throughout the United States.

Kyle Angle is the son of Jenny Angle and Jim Angle. At Lee’s Summit High School, Kyle participates in National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, math club, math tutoring, Sounds of Summit Chamber Choir, pianist for jazz band, pianist in pit orchestras for school musicals, math and science competitions, tiger mentoring and A+ Program.

Andy Jarnevic is the son of Michelle Jarnevic and Tom Jarnevic. At Lee’s Summit High School, Andy participates in math club, tiger mentoring, National Honor Society, International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and was a Missouri Scholar.

Sam Dowd is the son of Lisa Dowd and Tom Dowd. At Lee’s Summit North High School, Sam participates in Eco Club, debate, math club, Youth in Government, Spanish club, Spanish Honor Society, A+ Program and trapmasters.

Heidi Simpson is the daughter of Nora Wineland and Craig Simpson. At Lee’s Summit North High School, Heidi participates in the foreign exchange student program, Spanish club, German club, Spanish National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, National Honor Society, theatre club, book club, Scholar Bowl, Science Knowledge Bowl and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate.

Evan Weidner is the son of Damita Weidner and Gerald Weidner. At Lee’s Summit North High School, Evan participates in Bronco Smart, National Honor Society, varsity wrestling and was engineering student of the year in 2013.

Anna Poudel is the daughter of Deanna Snyder and Chitra Poudel. At Lee’s Summit West High School, Anna participates as editor-in-chief of the Titan Scroll, International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, French club, National Honor Society, kindness council and freshman mentor.
