Miss Jessie Berryman Scruggs, 62, a member of the first graduating class of Lee’s Summit High School died. She was born in 1873 near Lee’s Summit and had lived the last seventeen years in Kansas City. She graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1893 and was the first one in the class to be buried in the local cemetery.

75 years ago

September 1938

What is now known as the Bank of Lee’s Summit has been in business for 70 years. It started in 1868 as the Colburn and Hargis. Various changes in ownership and personnel have been made through the years. Today’s officers and directors are E.W. Cooper, President; Ben Hoke, Vice President; Fred Campbell, Cashier; Lee Garvin, Assistant Cashier; Jake Hoke, Assistant Cashier; Robert Williams, Director and H.F. Maxwell, Director.

40 years ago

September 1973

New officers for the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce were installed. They are Bill Worley, President; Jim Burns, Vice President; Bill Edison, Director; Betty Norris, Treasurer; and Buck Langsford, Secretary.

Elwood Lentz begins his 22nd year as announcer for the Lee’s Summit Tigers football games. Since the 1951 season Lentz has seen four different head coaches. J.D. Copple was coach when he started. Then came Francis Titus. Bob Diekmann, who now is the principal of the Senior High, followed Titus. Then the present coach, Walt Hicklin.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Hitt have donated land on Allendale Lake Road in Greenwood for a park in memory of their son who died several years ago of a kidney ailment.
