Plane crash claims life of Greenwood man

A Greenwood man died after a plane crash Oct. 1 near Lone Jack.

Richard Scalet, 56, of Greenwood was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 13300 block of Ragsdale Road. The location is in unincorporated Jackson County north of U.S. 50 Highway near Lone Jack.

According to Jackson County Sheriff’s Department officials, at approximately 6 p.m. Oct. 1 deputies responded to the area in regard to a reported plane crash. Upon the arrival of the deputies Lone Jack Fire and EMS personnel was on scene and declared the pilot of the aircraft was dead.

An initial investigation revealed Scalet was operating a Kolb FireStar Ultra Light aircraft and was seen taking off when the Ultra Light took a sharp turn and crashed into a grassy field west of the runway. Scalet was alone, and no one else was injured in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Lone Jack Police Department, and the FAA which continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
