R-7 high school students named September Optimist students of the Month

Six Lee’s Summit R-7 School District high school seniors were recently named September Optimist Students of the Month by the Lee’s Summit Breakfast Optimist Club. The club honors six seniors each month for outstanding scholarship and citizenship.

Recognized students for September were Libby Wilson, Lee’s Summit High School; Kyle Angle, LSHS; Logan Tootle, Lee’s Summit North High School; David Mershon, LSNHS; Megan McFarland, Lee’s Summit West High School; and Philip Melchert, LSWHS.

Libby Wilson, daughter of Erin Wilson and Dan Wilson, has been active in National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Missouri Scholars Academy, volleyball, A+ Program and tiger mentoring. After high school, Libby plans to attend a four-year university to obtain a degree in Spanish and a master’s degree in a specific branch of biological research.

Kyle Angle, son of Jennifer Angle and James Angle, has been active in National Honor Society, math club and chamber choir. After high school, Kyle plans to attend college to obtain masters degrees to go into research and writing.

Logan Tootle, daughter of Charelle Tootle and Bob Tootle, has been active in softball, bronco smart, student senate, math club and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. After high school, Logan plans to attend Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., to pursue a degree in international studies while playing softball.

David Mershon, son of Tracey Mershon and Bruce Mershon, has been active in football, debate and is president of the student body. After high school, David hopes to attend the Naval Academy or West Point.

Megan McFarland, daughter of Myra McFarland and Todd McFarland, has been active in cross country, basketball, soccer, track, titan smart, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student senate, Student Activity Advisory Council, National Honor Society and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. After high school, Megan plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering and then attend medical school.

Philip Melchert, son of Stephanie Melchert and Russ Melchert, has been active in chamber choir, concert choir, German National Honor Society, National Honor Society and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. After high school, Philip plans to attend college to go into pharmaceutical research and possibly pursue his Ph.D.
