Jacqueline June Jones Skelton, 78, passed away on Oct. 18, 2013 in Lee’s Summit.

Jacqueline was born in Eagleville, Mo., to Virginia and Bert Jones on Feb. 11, 1935. She went to North Harrison High School and graduated as Valedictorian in 1953. She enrolled at the University of Kansas in the fall of 1953 then transferred to Oklahoma State University graduating with high honors in 1958 with a Bachelors of Science degree. She completed her Master of Arts in English in 1979 from University of Central Missouri. She married Jimmy Len Skelton Jan. 31, 1958. They resided in San Antonio; Marrakech, Morocco; Dreux, France; Hannibal, Mo., and Blue Springs before settling in Lee’s Summit in 1966.

When her children were young she remained in the home as a dedicated wife and mother. She was actively involved in numerous community organizations including the PTA where she served in different capacities including President. She also acted as superintendent of Sunday schools for the First Presbyterian Church of Lee’s Summit. In 1978 she began her teaching career. She taught college preparatory English at Lee’s Summit High School, retiring after twenty years of dedication to her students in 1998.

She was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the Prairie chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. During her teaching career she directed the senior prom and was the initial organizer of Project Graduation. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Teaching Award. Upon retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, reading the classics, and indulging her passion for travel which took her to five continents and twenty-four countries.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Virginia Jones; and Jim’s parents, Opal and Luther Skelton and later by his stepmother, Pauline Skelton. She is survived by her husband, Jim Skelton; one brother, Ed Jones; two sisters-in-law, Judy Jones and Sara Skelton; two daughters, Stephanie (Frank) Tsuru and Ginny Barragan; one son, Marc (Janelle) Skelton; and seven grandchildren, Seth Piatczyc, Sebastian Barragan, Alex Skelton, Bailey Tsuru, Chase Skelton and Elle Barragan; two nephews, Tim and Todd Jones; numerous cousins; great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lee’s Summit on Oct.21 at 10:30 a.m., Father David With and Royce Smith presiding. There will be a visitation at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. Burial will follow at Allen Cemetery in Eagleville, Mo., at approximately 3 p.m., performed by Reverend Royce Smith.
