November 20, 2013

An Overland Park man charged in connection with the thefts of donation containers from a Wal-Mart store in Lee’s Summit faces two felony counts of stealing, both Class C felonies.

According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Michael W. Sterbach, 49, is accused of taking the containers from the Wal-Mart store at 1000 N.E. Sam Walton Lane in Lee's Summit Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.

Video surveillance cameras captured the suspect taking the containers. Once the images went out on social media sites, Lee’s Summit Police Department detectives received information identifying the suspect as Sterbach.

The defendant admitted to taking the Children’s Miracle Network containers. He told police the containers had $80 to $90 in them; each container is valued at $495. Sterbach told police he wanted to get money for drugs.
