A solution needed for transfer law

December 18, 2013

Dear Editor,

I hope citizens will contact their elected officials and ask them to work with David McGehee, Lee’s Summit R-7 superintendent, to develop a legislative solution to the recent Missouri Supreme Court decision to uphold the transfer law, so that we are protected as homeowners from the government trend to redistribute wealth.

I have read about “The New Path to Excellence” that could provide an alternative approach to the current punitive and financially unsustainable measures currently required under the student transfer statute. There may also be other workable solutions to this long-term problem.

I am well-acquainted with the long history of the incompetent Kansas City Missouri School District. While I sympathize with the plight of those students, that situation will never get better until the parents of those children take responsibility for their actions. Transferring those students to R-7 will not solve the accountability problem and may destroy any incentive for the KCMSD to improve. That district spent over $1 billion to upgrade, and look where it is today.
