December 18, 2013

A Kansas City man will spend 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer with the Lee’s Summit Police Department

Ash-Od L. Chavez, 18, was sentenced Dec. 13 to 15 years in prison for firing a gun at a Lee’s Summit police officer in June of last year.

According to a news release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, an officer responding to a call in the 500 block of N.E. Howard Ave. saw Chavez walking away from him and ordered him to stop. Chavez fired two shots and ran, court records indicated.

After his arrest, Chavez told police he fired at the officer because he didn’t want to be caught with a weapon, court records said.
