KCP&L warns customers of scams

February 5, 2014

KCP&L is warning Kansas and Missouri residents of a rise in scams targeting utility customers. Over the past several weeks, both phone and email scams involving customers’ utility bills have been reported.

Phone calls from scammers have been notifying customers they are past due on their bills and demanding immediate payment to avoid service disconnection. KCP&L does not use this communication process in respect to disconnection. Emails are also circulating that contain a fake utility bill with a falsified account number and company name and links to a malicious site.

Neither the phone calls nor the emails are associated with KCP&L.

If customers ever have questions about the legitimacy of a bill, phone call or email regarding their utility bill, they should contact the KCP&L Customer Contact Center at 1-888-471-5275.

Other important safety tips:

• Be suspicious of emails regarding your utility bill if you have not requested online communications from KCP&L.

• For customers using KCP&L’s online bill pay system, always make online payments directly through kcpl.com.

• Never provide personal information via email or click any suspicious links.

• Never give credit card, debit card, Social Security, ATM, checking or savings account numbers to anyone who comes to your home, calls, text and/or sends an e-mail requesting this information in respect to your utility bill, without also verifying that person is with KCP&L through calling KCP&L’s Customer Contact Center.

If you feel you have been a victim of this scam please work with your local law enforcement agency to report the crime. If you are suspicious of anyone collecting information on KCP&L’s behalf, call the KCP&L Customer Contact Center at (888) 471-5275, prior to supplying personal or payment information.
