Lee’s Summit North coach Mike Hilbert isn’t going to let a little thing like seeding bother him.
Sure, Hilbert’s Broncos are seeded fourth in their five-team district, but they’ve faced that before and everything worked out just fine.
“Lee’s Summit North has been a fourth seed before in the district tournament and won the whole thing.” Hilbert said. “That’s what’s neat about high school basketball. Everybody gets to start over in the district tournament.’
That do-over time begins this week when district play gets under way for Lee’s Summit’s boys and girls. Lee’s Summit North, 10-13 going into tonight’s season finale at Blue Springs South, faces Blue Springs in the first round of the Class 5 District 13 boys tournament 7 p.m. March 3 at Raytown.
Lee’s Summit, 16-7 heading into tonight, is in the same district and takes on Raytown at 8:30 p.m. on March 4. The final is set for 7:45 p.m. March 7.
Hilbert knows the Broncos have their work cut out for them if they want to advance. North beat Blue Springs twice during the regular season, but neither win came easy. A win over the Wildcats would mean a matchup with top-seeded Blue Springs South.
“We faced Blue Springs twice and the two games were incredible dogfights,” Hilbert said. “We’ll have to play well Monday night if we want to advance and play a Blue Springs South team that I feel is the best team in Missouri. But I think our guys have a lot of confidence in their abilities.”
Lee’s Summit West has the No. 1 seed in the Class 5 District 16 tournament at Raymore-Peculiar. The Titans, 21-3 before tonight, will meet the winner of the first round game between Ruskin and Belton at 5:30 p.m. March 6. The final is set for 7 p.m. March 7. Rockhurst and Ray-Pec are also in the field.
Lee’s Summit North has the No. 1 seed in the Class 5 District 13 girls tournament at Raytown. The Broncos, 19-4, will take on either Lee’s Summit, 8-15, or Raytown at 5:30 p.m. March 4. Lee’s Summit and Raytown play at 5:30 p.m. March 3. The final is set for 6 p.m. March 7.
Lee’s Summit West’s girls also have a No. 1 seed in the Class 5 District 15 field at Ray-Pec. West, 15-8, will meet either Belton or Ruskin at 5:30 p.m. March 4. The final is set for 5:30 p.m. March 7.
The champions from both districts will advance to sectional and quarterfinal rounds March 12 and 15 at the Independence Events Center.
