As the former Chief of Police and a life-long resident of Lee’s Summit, I want to take this opportunity to express my support for the upcoming no tax increase bond issue that will be on the April 8 ballot.
The proposed redesign and reconstruction of the 291/50 highway interchange will be instrumental in both ensuring safety and saving lives. Since 2007 there have been in excess of 300 traffic accidents at this intersection, some resulting in disabling injuries and three resulting in the loss of life.
Traffic congestion, poor visibility and long queues of traffic are additional problems with the current configuration of the intersection. It is also important to note that nearly 100 school buses utilize this bridge daily, which brings up additional safety considerations. Additionally, the current bridge structure is over 50 years old and rated “serious condition” by the Missouri Department of Transportation.
Not only will the reconstruction and redesign of the intersection move traffic through the intersection more quickly but it will also have a positive impact on response times for our public safety vehicles. Reducing congestion by minimizing and synchronizing signaling will allow public safety vehicles the ability to respond more quickly, especially when seconds count.
There is more I could say about the positive impact this project will have on our community, but the most important point I want to make is this, please join me in voting “yes” on Question 1 on April 8.
