Maryn White, a seventh-grade student at Summit Lakes Middle School, was named a distinguished finalist and top runner-up in the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Missouri.

Maryn has raised nearly $10,000 to support the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation by coordinating the team “Maryn’s Magnificent Marchers” to walk in the foundation’s charity event. The seventh-grader, diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 10, was named an “Honored Hero” for the Kansas City Takes Steps Walk in 2013. She is currently working with the foundation to advocate for awareness, funding and affordable healthcare coverage.

The SLMS student also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

The Prudential Spirit of Community of Awards represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. All public and private middle and high schools, as well as Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and HandsOn Network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for the local Prudential Spirit of Community Award.
