March 19, 2014

It’s March Madness time, and Lee’s Summit high school basketball fans have two reasons to feel the excitement.

Lee’s Summit will be doubly represented in the Class 5 state boys and girls basketball tournaments this week, with Lee’s Summit West reaching the boys’ Final Four and Lee’s Summit North in the girls’. Both teams play their semifinal games March 20 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Lee’s Summit West, 26-3, advanced to the state tournament for the second time in three seasons with a 74-55 victory over cross-town rival Lee’s Summit on March 15 at the Independence Events Center. The Titans will meet Christian Brothers College High of St. Louis, 23-7, at 6:50 p.m.

Lee’s Summit North, 23-5, is in the Final Four for the first time since 2002 after beating North Kansas City 49-44 in another quarterfinal match-up March 15 at the Events Center. The Broncos will meet Eureka, 26-2, at 3:30 p.m.

The finals and third-place games will be played March 22. The boys final is set for 4:30 p.m. and the consolation at 12:45. The girls final is scheduled for 2:40 p.m. and the third-place game will take place at 11 a.m.

Tickets are $8 per session and can be purchased at Mizzou Arena.
