In the midst of budget shortfalls for the city of Lee’s Summit, are there specific programs, positions or other cuts you would be in favor of making?
I believe it is important to identify critical city functions that should be exempt from cuts. To me, infrastructure must remain in place. Fire and police forces, licensing and inspection, and public works should be exempt.
Discussions about having an economic development component in city hall have recently surfaced. Do you favor adding additional funding to the EDC and/or funding an additional position?
With the establishment of the Development Center, measurement metrics should be in place.
What topics would you like to see addressed at future city council retreats?
Economic Development - We need comprehensive economic development with tax credit restructuring that incentives private investment, quality business development, and targeted job creation.
Infrastructure - Infrastructure must be improved and expanded. Infrastructure impacts economic development. Economic Development impacts schools. Adequate funding of police, fire, and community programs is essential. We must carefully select how funds are spent and constantly reevaluate effectiveness.
City Finance - Adequate funding must be continued for quality schools. Innovative campus opportunities remain in the forefront of our constituents. We should support the ‘’ New Path To Excellence” Lee’s Summit proposal.
Public Safety - Adequate police, fire, and community program funding is essential. We must carefully select how funds are spent and constantly reevaluate their effectiveness.
Arnold Hall, the arts and the approved outdoor performance space are all topics of discussion right now. What do you think should be done with Arnold Hall and are you in favor of the outdoor space remaining next to that structure?
Arnold Hall and prior buildings at this location have always served the community. I believe that we should continue this tradition. I am not sure what, if any, alternative uses should be made of this property. Based on the current market for commercial real estate, this is probably a challenging time to sell it. I am in favor of the outdoor space remaining next to the structure if there is a clear plan for its use.
