Cancer fundraiser April 10

April 9, 2014

Karen McWhirt, local author of the book Together We Will Win is sponsoring a cancer charity fundraiser this week with Habanero’s Restaurant.

The public event is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 10, at Habanero’s which is donating 15 percent of patron’s meal ticket to the University of Kansas Cancer Center, with a printed flier presented with payment.

The flier can be found online at www.IansStory.org or www.TogetherWeWillWin.net or the events Facebook page, Ian’s Story Fundraiser for the University of Kansas Cancer Center Pediatrics.

Since her son’s death from the disease in 2005, McWhirt continues to raise awareness of testicular cancer through the Ian’s Story organization, her book and a music album Something to Remember, a compact disc Ian had recorded before his diagnosis.

McWhirt offers a free CD with every book purchased, plus a support bracelet with the book’s title, Together We Will Win, in honor of Ian’s wish to remind all young men of testicular cancer awareness. The book is available through the author’s website and online book sellers. She donates her royalties to KU Kids Healing Place at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Since her book’s release in 2010, McWhirt has donated more than 100 books to academic libraries, patient resource centers and high school students across the United States. She offers free speaking and publications to raise awareness of the disease.
