Lee’s Summit High girls soccer team to host annual Melanie Grace Kickin' Against Cancer game

April 25, 2014

The seventh annual “Melanie Grace Kickin’ Against Cancer” Benefit Soccer game is scheduled for May 6 at the Lee’s Summit High School Soccer Complex. The Tigers will don the “purple jersey,” and battle conference foe Blue Springs in the annual match.

The first match kicks off at 4:00 p.m.with the C-team game, followed by the junior-varsity match at 5:30 p.m., and culminating in the varsity match at 7 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Lee’s Summit girls soccer team held its first Kickin’ Against Cancer game in 2007 to honor Melanie Grace Lindmark, a Lee’s Summit girl who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2002 when she was four years old. Melanie passed away in 2005 and touched the lives of everyone she met, especially the students at Lee’s Summit High School.

The team honors Melanie’s memory each year by selecting a Kansas City area individual facing cancer to be the recipient of the proceeds generated by the event. This year the Tigers have selected Jonas Borchert, a Lee’s Summit High sophomore who was diagnosed in middle school with Ewing’s sarcoma.

The event will include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and Melanie Grace T-shirt sales. Last year’s event raised $7,000 with the help of the community and local businesses.
