Tigers score win over Jaguars

May 2, 2014

Lee’s Summit has enjoyed superb defense all season. Now the Tigers’ offense is starting to get in on the act.

Lee’s Summit knocked off Blue Springs South 3-1 April 29 at Hertzog Stadium. And while the Tigers again did a good job of keeping the Jaguars away from the goal most of the game, it was their offense that pleased coach David Wiebenga the most.

“The offense played really well in the win,” Wiebenga said. “We are starting to put more goals away and that has really taken the pressure off of our defense.”

Wiebenga said Payton Seymour, Taylor Walker, Jackie Sampson, Kennedy Strain, and Maddie Huser all contributed to the attack with their individual play, and caused match-up issues for Blue Springs South.

That helped the Tigers take a 2-0 lead in the first 24 minutes on goals from Courtney Killian and Annie Shackleford. The Jaguars answered with a goal from Mollie Maupin in about two minutes later, but the Tigers widened their lead when Maddie Souder scored early in the second half.

The win lifted Lee’s Summit to 6-3-1 overall heading into the home stretch of the conference season.

“We are excited for the stretch run here in May,” Wiebenga said.
