Leaders in social responsibility

Lee's Summit JournalMay 8, 2014

Last year a National Survey of Business Support for the Arts found that 64 percent of U.S. companies contributed to philanthropic causes in 2012, and 19 percent of business support went to the arts.

Why did businesses think it’s important to contribute to the arts? They cited the “liveability” factor, saying the arts are important because both their employees and customers prefer to live in communities with a vibrant arts scene.

Saint Luke’s East Hospital is one example of a business that supports the arts. The hospital is again the title sponsor of a concert featuring Lee’s Summit Symphony at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on May 25. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the rest of the greater Kansas City region to be exposed to our orchestra, and an event that is guaranteed to make any Lee’s Summit citizen proud.

Saint Luke’s East Hospital is a member of Saint Luke’s Health System, which consists of 10 area hospitals and several medical practices providing a range of inpatient, outpatient and home care services. They are completing yet another multi-million dollar expansion later this year.

The 500 physicians, other employees and the hospital believe they have a responsibility to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual health of people in the metropolitan Kansas City area and the surrounding region.

Ron Baker, CEO, says Saint Luke’s East Hospital is proud to support an outstanding organization like the symphony that brings such wonderful and accessible music to the community.

“Music can be therapeutic and healing, and at Saint Luke’s we are all about making people better. We are grateful that the Lee’s Summit community has supported us in this mission, and it is our great pleasure in turn to support groups who also bring healing aspects to the community” Baker said.

Bob White, president of the Lee’s Summit Symphony, confirms the importance of business sponsorships because ticket sales generate only one third of the revenue needed to maintain most performing arts groups. He is especially grateful to the hospital for being a platinum sponsor.

Lee’s Summit can be very proud of the Lee’s Summit Symphony and its business sponsors, including Saint Luke’s East Hospital. Tickets for the Lee’s Summit Symphony Showcase concert at the Kauffman Center are available at both HyVee stores and at
