Broncos reach district final; Tigers fall in first round

Lee’s Summit North reached the championship game of the Class 5 District 14 baseball tournament with two victories at the Bronco Athletic Complex.

After beating Raytown South 8-3 May 17 in the first round, the Broncos downed Blue Springs 8-3 in the semifinals to set up a meeting with Blue Springs South May 20 in the final.

North was able to shut down Blue Springs, 13-15, with solid pitching from starter Michael Marra and reliever Nate Webb. Marra threw 4 1/3 innings for the win while Marra held the Wildcats over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Collin Rice got the Broncos going when he drove in two runs with a double in the first inning. Chase Swisher added a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Lee’s Summit was elminated from the Class 5 District 13 tournament at Raymore-Peculiar with a 7-1 loss to Belton May 17 in the first round.

Tigers starter Noah Arni protected a 1-0 lead by holding Belton to three hits while striking out eight over five innings before the Pirates exploded for six runs on five hits in the sixth. Clint Jennings had two doubles and scored the Tigers’ run in the fourth.

Lee’s Summit ended the season with an 18-11 record.
