Lee’s Summit West will be making a return trip to the Class 2 state tennis tournament.
The Titans will have one doubles team and a singles entry again this year after Tanner Ferrell and the team of Franklin Zhong and Aaron Cunningham won in the sectional tournament May 20 at Lee’s Summit North.
Ferrell, a junior, advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nick Hurt of William Chrisman. Zhong, a junior, and Cunningham, a senior, qualified with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mitchell Wilhoit and Sam Phillips of Blue Springs.
Also going to state will be the Lee’s Summit doubles team of Justin Bowne and Kevin Glenn, who qualified by beating Blue Springs South’s Jose Garchitorena and Jared Marten 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in sectionals.
Farrell will carry a 19-3 record to the state tournament, which runs May 29-31 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. Zhong and Cunningham are 22-3 on the year. Farrell bowed out in the first round of last year’s state tournament, while Cunningham and Zhong made it to the second round.
Considering their past success, Lee’s Summit West tennis coach Paul Klene wasn’t surprised to see all three make it to state again.
“I felt pretty confident they would make it out again,” Klene said. “They worked hard and came prepared.”
Lee’s Summit coach Megan Hobbs says the same thing about Bowne and Glenn, who will take a 23-18 record to state. Bowne, the Tigers’ only junior, worked his way up from being an exhibitions-only player as a freshman. Glenn, a sophomore, moved up from No. 4 to No.1 on the varsity squad.
“Kevin and Justin have worked extremely hard to get to this point,” Hobbs said. “While we are all pleasantly surprised at their state appearance this year, we are not surprised because this is what they have worked for.”
West will also compete in the Class 2 team sectionals May 24 at Liberty. The Titans, who are 16-0 in team play, will meet Liberty North, with the winner facing either Rockhurst or Blue Springs South for a spot in the state team tournament.
