Titans doubles team takes fourth in state tennis tournament

Franklin Zhong and Aaron Cunningham of Lee’s Summit West took fourth place in doubles at the Class 2 state tennis tournament May 30-31at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

Zhong, a junior, and Cunningham, a senior, defeated Scott Hornung and Cameron Holtz of Fort Zumwalt South 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and Benjamin Corbin and Jacob Peterson of Ladue Horton Watkins 7-5 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

The Titans duo, which lost in the second round at state last season, fell to Rockhurst’s Jack Evans and Joe O’Connor 6-1, 7-6(7-2) in the semifinals. Evans and O’Connor went on to win the state title.

Lee’s Summit’s doubles entry of Kevin Glenn and Justin Bowne, who were making their first appearance in the state tournament, lost to Jack Harris and Jacob Kauppila of Marquette 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.

Lee’s Summit West junior Tanner Farrell, making his second appearance in the Class 2 singles tournament, lost to Darren Cavero of Springfield Central 1-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the opening round.
